SANDUNES FIFTY PERCENT (FT. RAMYA POTHURI)

Citing influences from TMR favourite Sudan Archives to jazz traditionalists including Dave Brubeck, Mumbai-based producer Sandunes makes the kind of music that makes you want to close your eyes and drift away. Arriving alongside the announcement of her new EP Spend Some Time, introductory track 'Fifty Percent' features irresistibly smooth vocals by Sandunes' talented neighbour-of-sorts Ramya Pothuri. Musically immersive, subtly detuned synth scales ascend as gentle piano parts ripple beneath a heady atmosphere of tweeting birds, distant flutes and reverb-soaked backing vocals. Jazzy chords provide warm and sincerity as sparse electronic percussion picks up the pace as the track progresses. Speaking of the song Sandunes (aka Sanaya Aredeshir) said: “This song is very close to my heart. I heard Trey Anastasio in a documentary once say that once you’ve told a personal/emotional story about a part of your life through a song, it’s like you opened a tap and things begin to flow out of you into your writing. This song was my first attempt at bringing a lot of vulnerability into the writing and to use the music-making in a more evocative and emotional way, rather than it coming from an intellectual head space. It really wrote itself in an evening after I poured my feelings onto a keyboard." Spend Some Time will arrive on the 22nd of May via !K7. -Holly Mullineaux
